Interpreting Ludacris

Did you know that the composer Christopher Brian Bridges turned 30 last month? So young still ... and yet has it really been five years since his innovative single, "Move Bitch" seemingly ruled the airwaves? Consider the lyrical beauty of the chorus:

Move bitch, get out the way.
Get out the way, bitch, get out the way.
Move bitch, get out the way.
Get out the way, bitch, get out the way.

If you're like me, you spent countless hours straining your grey matter to uncover what must be a deeper meaning within Mr. Bridges' work. Surely, this isn't simply the composer's way of saying, "Excuse me, ma'am. I'm coming through, so would you kindly step aside?" I even briefly entertained other possibilities. For example, another rather literal interpretation could involve a man addressing his well loved family pet. (You know how it is when you want to relax, if only ol' Ginger weren't sprawled across the entire sofa?) So, perhaps the lyrics recall such a scenario, in which the speaker is addressing the, in this case female, canine: "Look, you're my dog and I love you, but you're in my spot."

Normally, I'd throw my arms up and carry on with my rather mundane existence. However, I believe perhaps that unusual duple-meter opening (the undeniable spondaic beauty of "MOVE BITCH") juxtaposed with the interesting pairing of a trochaic foot ("GET out") and an iamb ("the WAY") suggests a certain commentary comparing modern syntax on the one hand with the syncopated rhythms of a past era on the other. Consider this excerpt from Wikipedia's article on cultural criticism :

Cultural criticism is normally understood to deal with some fundamental perceived problems, rather than minor improvements: it is asserted that things are heading in the wrong direction, or that values are wrongly placed. (emphasis added)

See what I'm getting at? What would one say, after all, when confronted with "misplaced values" -- especially, I might add, if said values are figuratively blocking one's path? I submit that one could do much worse than address the problem head on: "Move Bitch. Get out the way." Such agonizing pathos, no? Thus, BSUWG salutes the genius of Mr. Christopher Brian Bridges, a.k.a. Ludacris.
