A Public Thank-You to an Anonymous Rock Essayist

11 Apr 2007

Today, I was wondering exactly what the "that" is that the singer from Meat Loaf wouldn't do in that famous song, "I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That )." Turns out I wasn't the only one, as the Wikipedia has a lengthy explication.

"Although some people assume that 'that' is an exophoric reference to a sex act, it is actually an anaphoric reference to the varying activities and feelings that are specified as antecedents in the lyric that the singer says that he won't do."

Indeed, I assumed the "that" was a sex act, and had planned to write up a lengthy and moderately humorous account surpassing most people's threshold for good taste, further alienating my base of loyal readers. However, I now stand corrected and have canceled the day's blogging activity. Thank you, Wikipedia ... I guess. You've cleared this issue up for me once and for all.

I heard variations of that sentence in my teens. Most of the time it turned out they were lying.
