YouTube Gems

18 Oct 2006

I know, I know ... I shouldn't be browsing YouTube at work. But here's some mesmerizing stuff -- a couple of videos by a guy who goes by "Jimmy Hook."

Episode 1: These five guys (7:24). "You wanna be a hate sponge, be a lawyer -- especially a defense lawyer." --Jimmy Hook.

Episode 2: Irish Girls (13:44). "Jimmy, in life, if you want sympathy, it's in the dictionary between shit and syphilis." --Jimmy's grandma. I absolutely love stuff like that, and have built some similar gems from my own step-grandmother into other things I've written.

I'm not entirely sure, but it looks like this guy takes existing footage and graphics from various sources, possibly adds in some of his own (or not?), masterfully edits them together, and adds a loosely scripted / highly entertaining voiceover. Again, mesmerizing -- and YouTube is the perfect venue for such work, as the guy can use whatever film and/or background music he wants. When you think about it, what better place than YouTube for the budding filmmaker these days? I'd love to get into video editing someday.

I've been kicking around some regular "features" I could add to my blog. One thing I think I'd enjoy would be doing interviews with others -- people I figure I'd have a thing or two to talk about with, you know? So, I dropped this dude, Jimmy Hook, a line via YouTube requesting an interview. If he accepts, it'll be my first one. If not, I'll think up someone else, maybe.

Just read your last two. You did well to not give the chick on the bus a smackdown, but it must have been tempting! The interview idea sounds interesting.
