IMHO Installment #99: Sundays Rock

Every Saturday and Sunday, my daughter and I go out for bagels. We've been doing this -- one might say religiously -- for more than 11 years. (She's 12, but we didn't start until she was 1.)

The kid was an early talker, btw. The bagel-mongers (bagelistas?) used find it funny when they'd ask me if I needed anything "for the baby" and I'd say, "Ask her yourself." Baby kid-o used to smile, point at the "everything bagels," and shout: "Evry-sing!"

It's strange how the years pass so quickly. One day you're talking about PBS Kids shows, and then you blink and there's a 12-year-old in the back seat quoting rock lyrics.

Sunday, we were driving past the local Catholic church and ran into some traffic. "A lot of people go to church, don't they?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said. "I tell you, one of the great joys of my adult life is knowing that I never have to go to church anymore."

"Was it that bad?"

"I can't think of anything more boring on the planet, kid-o."

"Yeah," she added, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints."

I laughed out loud. IMHO, it's a gold-star day when your kid first quotes Billy Joel lyrics.

We enjoy being heathens.

Then she asked, "Isn't it true that all religions think that everyone from different religions is going to some kind of hell?"

"Pretty much."

"So, then, I don't see the logic behind the war. Why can't the Christians and the Muslims not fight? Why can't they just both be satisfied that their enemy is going to spend eternity in hell?"

I thought that was a pretty good question.
