IMHO Installment #30: LifeGems Are Weird

18 Apr 2007

Ever hear of a LifeGem? Basically, when a person or pet dies, this company will take the cremated remains, squeeze them under 89 kajillion pounds of heat and pressure, and turn them into diamonds -- all for low-low prices ranging from $2,500 to $25,000. The site is filled with touching testimonials from people who now wear their grandma in a ring, their dead dog in a pair of earrings, or even their kid in a pendant. For any writers out there, I offer this free as a humorous plot or subplot: Have something happen to a LifeGem -- Grandma washed down the drain, Grandpa stolen by a mugger, beloved Fido left on a sink at a New Jersey Turnpike rest stop. I thought of a few much worse ones, but with this being a family oriented blog and all, I self-edited. Still, you can imagine the zany possibilities.

I was planning to have my remains fed to the hogs, but this lifegem idea seems almost as appealing.

Me: "Honey, can I have some new jewelry?"

Him: "Over my dead body."

Me: "OK ... "

(Disclaimer: the above never happened)
